When can I take my practical driving test?

You can book your practical driving test if you’re at least 17, have a valid provisional licence, and you’ve passed your theory test. Once you’ve passed the driving theory test you’ll receive a pass certificate number, which lasts 2 years. Make sure you pass your practical within this time, or you’ll have to take and pass the theory test again.

According to the UK, you can book your practical driving test if you are at least 17 years old, and have a valid provisional licence. According to DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency), there is no minimum number of lessons or hours of practice you need, the average is 45 hours of driving lessons. How to book your practical driving test?

Once you are ready for the practical driving test, follow the guidelines-
  • Open the website URL (gov.uk)
  • Then log in with your driving licence number, booking reference number or your theory pass number
  • Once logged in, you can click on the candidate information section, then you will have to enter your personal information like contact number and email address
  • Then you have to add contact information as it is essential to ensure that the examiner can contact you if in case the date or time of the driving test gets rescheduled.

Essential documents you need to provide to book your practical driving test-

What happens during the practical driving test?

There are 5 parts to the driving test and it is the same for both manual and automatic cars.

  • an eyesight check
  • ‘Show me, tell me’ vehicle safety questions
  • general driving ability
  • reversing your vehicle
  • independent driving

Eyesight check

During the eyesight check, you have to read the number plate from the distance of –

  • 20 m for the vehicles with any new-style number plate

You will fail the practical driving test on failing the eyesight check. 

‘Show me, tell me’ questions

During this, you will be asked 2 vehicle safety questions – ‘Show me, tell me’ questions

The examiner will ask you –

  • ‘Tell me’ question while starting the test, before you start driving
  • ‘Show me’ question while you’re driving in the test

Your general driving ability

To check your general driving ability, you have to drive in various road and traffic conditions.

Our examiner will provide you with directions to follow.

Pulling over at the side of the road

During this, you will be asked to pull over and pull away and it includes –

  • Normal stops at the side of the road
  • Pulling out from behind a parked vehicle
  • A hill start

The examiner can ask you to carry out an emergency stop too.

Reversing your vehicle

The examiner will ask you to do one of the following exercises:

  • Parallel park at the side of the road
  • Park in a parking bay – either by driving in and reversing out, or reversing in and driving out-this you have to perform according to the examiner
  • You will have to pull up on the right-hand side of the road. Then you have to reverse for around 2 car lengths and rejoin the traffic

Independent driving

As the examiner will ask, you will have to drive for about 20 minutes

  • directions from a sat nav
  • traffic signs

Once you have passed with flying colours, you will receive your full coveted driving licence. You can drive freely and be a safe & confident driver.
